A study warns of "joint injections"...more dangerous than you think

Two new studies suggest that steroid injections used to treat osteoarthritis of the knee may actually worsen the condition.
Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, and the Medical College of Chicago collected data from hundreds of osteoporosis patients to measure how well their condition reacted to the injections.
Between the two studies, 94 patients who received corticosteroids, which are anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat a variety of medical conditions, saw their condition worsen.
Previous research suggests that corticosteroids may damage the cartilage in the joint and make it more susceptible to wear and tear, making patients need a hip or knee replacement.
More than 32.5 million adults in the United States suffer from knee osteoarthritis, and about 80 percent of adults over the age of 55 have evidence of the condition.
In the first study, researchers in California analyzed two years of data for 210 patients
suffer from osteoarthritis of the knees. More than half of the group, 140 people, did not receive injections during this time.
Of the rest, 44 were injected with corticosteroids, and the analysis showed that those who got the injections had a faster progression of arthritis compared to the other groups.
