Free radicals... freedom to destroy and harm
Dr. Osama Abu Al-Rub
A free radical is a molecule (or atom) that contains one or more unpaired electrons, making it unstable and highly reactive.
Radicals can strip electrons from other compounds to stabilize them, so the attacked molecule loses an electron, becomes a free radical itself, and begins a cascade of reactions that harm a living cell.
Free radicals attack important molecules, leading to cell damage, and their targets include all types of molecules in the body, such as fats, nucleic acids, and proteins.
Free radicals are produced through metabolism in the body, or are from external sources such as pollution, cigarette smoke, radiation, and chemicals.
The body works to destroy free radicals and get rid of them through certain mechanisms, but when this does not happen adequately, their accumulation in the body generates a phenomenon called oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress plays a major role in the development of chronic diseases such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, aging, cataracts, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative diseases.
It is believed that free radicals play a role in many diseases and conditions such as:
Aging.
cancer.
Cardiovascular diseases.
Neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's.
Lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Rheumatoid arthritis.
Kidney disease.
Age-related macular degeneration.
eye lens darkening.
The body contains many mechanisms to confront oxidative stress through the production of antioxidants, or through antioxidants that it obtains from the outside through food.
