Genetic factor that causes fatal cancer in children
Researchers from the United States, Italy and Belgium say they have succeeded in discovering a genetic factor whose mutation causes one of the most deadly types of cancer in children. This discovery opens the door to identifying families most likely to inherit this disease, as found in a study published Sunday in the British journal "Nature". "This is a critical discovery that not only helps in understanding the genetics that cause this disease, but also develops new ideas for how to treat," said John Maris, senior researcher at the Children's Cancer Research Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in the United States. The gene is ALK or anaplastic lymphoma kinase on chromosome 2. Neuroblastoma affects the nervous system, although it is rare, accounting for only 7% of cancers that affect children, and 15% of deaths from cancer among young people. However, the disease confuses doctors, as infants may contract it and then disappear without return, while children, especially older ones, may contract it and be very violent. This gene has previously been linked to lymphoma and lung cancer in adults, so children may benefit from research on how to inhibit its activity, such as drugs being developed to combat the disease. Scientists
also believe that they can develop genetic tests to detect the first signs of cancer at very early stages.
