What is the relationship between breast cancer and diabetes?
Is there a relationship between breast cancer and diabetes??
A new study has revealed that postmenopausal women who survive breast cancer are more likely to develop diabetes.
According to the Saudi newspaper, "Al-Riyadh", the American "HealthDay News" website stated that researchers at the Women's Research Institute in Toronto analyzed data from 1996 to 2008 to determine the incidence of diabetes among nearly 25,000 women who survived breast cancer at the age of more than 55 years, and 125 A woman without cancer.
During a period of more than 5 years of follow-up, approximately 10% of the women in the study developed diabetes. Compared to women who did not have cancer, the risk of developing diabetes among breast cancer survivors was 7% higher two years after cancer diagnosis, and 21% higher 10 years after diagnosis.
But the risk of developing diabetes decreased over time among breast cancer survivors who underwent chemotherapy, being 24 percent higher during the first two years of cancer diagnosis and 8 percent 10 years after diagnosis.
"Suppression of estrogen as a result of chemotherapy may also induce diabetes, but this factor may be less effective in this study involving postmenopausal women," said the researcher responsible for the study, Lauren Lipscomb. However, researchers are not sure that the risk of developing diabetes increases in breast cancer survivors who have not received chemotherapy.
