An oncologist warns of the relationship between cancer and summer
A Saudi consultant warned of summer diseases, noting that hot weather is one of the main factors in the spread of diseases, especially cancerous diseases.
"There is a direct relationship between some types of cancer and the summer season," said Dr. Hasna Al-Ghamdi, Director of the Oncology Center at King Abdulaziz Hospital in Jeddah, pointing out that hot weather has negative effects on the public health of cancer patients.
Dr. Al-Ghamdi added that the direct relationship between hot weather and cancerous diseases is the high rate of skin cancer when exposed to sunlight during the summer vacation, including ultraviolet rays with short wavelengths from 290 to 320 in workplaces, such as farms, deserts, and on beaches.
She pointed out that the indirect relationship of diseases to summer is the presence and spread of some microbes and parasites in hot places, and when they interact, they may lead to tumors, as is the case in Burkitt lymphomas, as malaria interacts with the Epchin virus in causing cancer.
Dr. Al-Ghamdi stated that primary liver cancer occurs as a result of eating poorly stored grains when contaminated with aflatoxin fungal toxins in hot and humid places.
She stressed that cancer patients in the summer should avoid sunstroke, and not go out in the heat, because it leads to skin rashes and photosensitivity that may occur in cancer patients who take chemotherapy and antibiotics.
The head of the Oncology Center stressed that sunburn, which increases the complications of cancer treatments, may be a way for microbes to enter the blood, especially in patients with weak immunity due to cancer, or because of treatment, in addition to heat fainting, and the subsequent injuries in the body from bleeding. Internal and external, and the occurrence of bone fractures, especially in elderly patients, or those who have “secondary” cancer spread in the body or bones, in addition to the so-called “Nile fever” and the pus infections that occur after itching, as other factors have been identified, including:

She called for eating fruits and vegetables in the summer, and washing them well before eating, warning that using air conditioners frequently in the summer may increase the chances of contracting Legionnaire's disease and fungal infections, especially in immunodeficiency patients, and cancer patients among them, and resorting to the use of bacterial filters. وقالت مديرة مركز الأورام في مستشفى الملك عبدالعزيز في جدة الدكتورة حسنة الغامدي: «إن هناك علاقة مباشرة بين بعض أنواع السرطانات وفصل الصيف»، لافتة إلى أن الطقس الحار له تأثيرات سلبية على الصحة العامة لمرضى السرطان.
وأضافت الدكتورة الغامدي أن العلاقة المباشرة بين الطقس الحار والأمراض السرطانية هي ارتفاع نسبة سرطان الجلد عند التعرض لأشعة الشمس في الإجازة الصيفية، بما فيها الأشعة فوق البنفسجية ذات الطول الموجي القصير من 290 إلى 320 في أماكن العمل، كالمزارع، والصحاري، وعلى الشواطئ.
ولفتت إلى أن العلاقة غير المباشرة للأمراض بالصيف وجود وانتشار بعض الميكروبات والطفيليات في الأماكن الحارة، وعند تفاعلها قد تؤدي إلى حدوث الأورام كما هو الحال في أورام «بيركت» الليمفاوية، إذ تتفاعل الملاريا مع فيروس «ايبتشين» في إحداث السرطان.
وأفادت الدكتورة الغامدي أن سرطان الكبد الأولي يحدث نتيجة تناول حبوب سيئة التخزين عند تلوثها بسموم «افلاتوكمين» الفطرية في الأماكن الحارة والرطبة .
وأكدت أن على مرضى السرطان في فصل الصيف تجنب ضربات الشمس، وعدم الخروج في أوقات الحر، لأنه يؤدي إلى حدوث الطفح الجلدي، والتحسس الجلدي الضوئي الذي قد يحدث في مرضى السرطان الذين يتناولون العلاج الكيماوي، والمضادات الحيوية.
وشددت رئيسة مركز الأورام على أن الحروق الشمسية التي تزيد من مضاعفات علاجات السرطان قد تكون منفذاً لدخول الميكروبات إلى الدم، خصوصاً عند المرضى ضعيفي المناعة بسبب السرطان، أو بسبب العلاج، إلى جانب أن الإغماء الحراري، وما قد يتبعه من إصابات في الجسم من نزف الدم الداخلي والخارجي، وحدوث كسور العظام، وخصوصاً في المرضى كبار السن، أو الذين لديهم «ثانويان» من السرطان منتشرة في الجسم أو العظام، إضافة إلى ما يسمى «حمى النيل» وما يحدث من التهابات صديدية بعد حكه، كما حددت عوامل أخرى، منها:
ضربة الشمس، والإنهاك الحراري اللذان لهما آثار سيئة على كمية السوائل في جسم المرضى.
وحذرت الدكتور الغامدي من التنقل بين الأماكن المكيفة وغير المكيفة، ما قد يؤدي إلى زيادة نسب الإصابة بميكروبات الجهاز التنفسي، موضحة أن مرضى السرطان أقل تحملاً لما يعرف بأمراض الصيف كالملاريا، والحصبة، وأمراض الجهاز التنفسي، والتهابات الجلد، وحمى التيفوئيد، والإسهال.
ودعت إلى تناول الفاكهة والخضراوات في الصيف، وغسلها جيداً قبل التناول، محذرة من أن استخدام المكيفات بكثرة في فصل الصيف قد يزيد من فرص الإصابة بمرض «ليجيونير»، والالتهابات الفطرية، خصوصاً في مرضى نقص المناعة، ومرضى السرطان منهم، واللجوء إلى استخدام مرشحات بكتيرية في المكيفات، مع عدم التعرض المباشر أو القريب للمكيفات.
ولفتت إلى وجود علاقة أخيرة بين الصيف والسرطان مرتبطة بتغيير الفصول والساعة البيولوجية للجسم البشري،
مؤكدة أن هذا الأمر يحتاج للبحث والدراسة بتعمق.
