وتنقسم أمراض الأمعاء الالتهابية إلى نوعين رئيسيين وهما: التهاب القولون التقرحى وداء كرون، ويصاحب هذه الأمراض حدوث تقرحات عديدة فى الأمعاء ونزول دم بالإضافة إلى ارتفاع الحرارة والانتفاخ وتقلصات البطن، وأثبتت الأبحاث فاعلية الدودة السوطية فى علاج الالتهابات المعوية، وهى تنتمى إلى فئة الديدان الإسطوانية أو المدورة التى تصيب الأمعاء الدقيقة والغليظة.
وكشفت النتائج عن أن الدودة السوطية ساهمت فى الحد من مستويات بكتيريا "Bacteroides " التى تحفز حدوث الالتهابات فى الأمعاء، وكما أنها تزيد من مستويات بكتيريا الكولستريديا "Clostridia " التى تساهم فى الحد من الالتهابات.
ومن المنتظر أن يتم إجراء تجارب إكلينيكية جديدة خلال الفترة القادمة لاختبار فاعلية الديدان فى علاج مجموعة من أمراض المناعة الذاتية الأخرى مثل التصلب المتعدد والتهاب المفاصل الروماتويدى ومرض السكر من النوع الأول.
ونشرت هذه النتائج بالمجلة العلمية الشهيرة "Science" خلال شهر أبريل الجارى.
وكانت الأبحاث الطبية السابقة قد أكدت فاعلية الخل فى الحد من أعراض التهابات القولون التقرحى، حيث ثبت أنه يعزز أعداد البكتيريا النافعة التى تكافح التهابات الأمعاء، وبالأخص بكتيريا "lactobacillus" وبكتيريا "bifidobacteria".
