Mysterious disease kills one and infects 30 others in Nigeria
Abuja: «Middle East Online»
A mysterious disease has killed at least one schoolboy in Nigeria and infected 30 others who have been hospitalized, sparking fear of a new outbreak in Africa's most populous country.
According to the British newspaper, "The Sun", the country's health officials have launched a major investigation into "the disease that has not yet been identified", after it struck a boarding school in Sokoto.
And press reports published by several Nigerian newspapers claimed that the disease could be meningitis, noting that it "killed an unspecified number of students."
However, Ahmed Abdel Rahman, director of public health in Sokoto, refused to confirm this claim.
Abdul Rahman said, “All the 30 students who were admitted to the hospital today have been treated and have been discharged from the hospital. The State Ministry of Health took samples from sick children to verify the causes and nature of the disease.”
He also urged people not to panic, saying that health ministry officials will share their findings with citizens once the investigation is completed.
Pictures published by Nigerian media showed the sick students lying on the hospital floor, looking very exhausted.
This comes a month after the emergence of a mysterious disease in Tanzania that causes patients to vomit blood, killing at least 15 people and injuring about 50 others.
