Do mice transmit corona infection to humans?
A shocking new study has found that rats in New York City, USA, can carry Covid-19 infection and transmit it to humans.
According to the British newspaper “The Guardian”, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that animal-to-human transmission is rare, but in this study the researchers call for a careful look at the virus in mice in search of new strains of Covid-19.
New York City rats may be famous for munching on the subway, but according to a new study, they can also carry the COVID-19 virus. American Society for Microbiology: Mice can transmit types of Covid-19 to humans
Mice transmit corona infection
The study, published Thursday in mBio, an open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology, concludes that New York rats are among nearly 8 million mice exposed to three types of COVID-19.
The Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has determined that animal-to-human transmission of COVID-19 is rare, noting that in most cases animals become infected by humans.
The CDC notes on its website that there is no evidence that animals play a significant role in the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, to humans.
Transmission of COVID-19 infection around the world
But the study's lead researcher, Dr. Henry Wan, said the new findings highlighted the need for further examination of virus risk in mouse populations to determine whether the virus was circulating in the animals and evolving into new strains that could pose a risk.
Wan, director of the Center for Influenza and Emerging Infectious Diseases at the University of Missouri, said the study was one of the first to show how COVID-19 variants could cause infection in mice in a large area of the United States.
Studies of mice in Hong Kong and Belgium found that they were exposed to the virus behind COVID-19, though it's unclear what kind.
But in the New York study, researchers performed viral studies and genome sequencing on samples taken from 79 mice.
Of the mice studied, 13 mice tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. The researchers then conducted a virus challenge study and found that the alpha, delta, and omicron variants caused infections in mice.
